Grosset & Dunlap Picture Covers
There are five picture cover formats. Three of the formats were published
by Grosset & Dunlap, Inc. The other two formats are single books for The
Deadly Dutchman reprint and The Magic Talisman book; they will be
described at a later date.
  
Back, Spine and Cover
All the formats have the following in common:
- The books are 7-5/8" x 5-1/8"
- The covers have a smooth composition with a pictorial binding.
- On the spine is the lightning bolt logo, the title of the volume, the
author's name (John Blaine) and the publisher (Grosset & Dunlap). A code
number appears at the bottom of the spine. The code is 88xx where
the xx is the number of the volume.
- The front cover of the book has the same illustration as the
dustjacket for volumes 1 through 16.
- The back cover has a list of Rick Brant books.
- The endpapers are a map showing Spindrift Island off the coast of New
Jersey. For volumes 1 through 16 the map has a slate-blue background. For
volumes 17 through 23 the map has a white background.
- The frontispiece is a black line drawing on white paper.

- The first Rick Brant book done in picture cover.
- Lightning bolt logo on the back cover.
- The color of the lightning bolt, the picture and the list of books
is magenta.
- The background is a greenish-gray.

- Cover background is a greenish-gray.
- No lightning bolt on the back cover.
- The color of the pictue and the list on the back cover is a
red-orange.
- The list on the back goes to The Flaming Mountain.

- Cover background is a whitish-gray.
- No lightning bolt on the back cover.
- The color of the pictue and the list on the back cover is a
red-orange.
